These two albums, out-of-print for many years, provide proof of the unheralded diversity of the late-'80s Los Angeles music scene, at a time when to many outsiders it seemed to be drowning in a sea of hair-metal bands. Band co-founders Jeff Clark (on vocals) and Grant Lee Phillips (on guitars) opted to concoct something much harder to pigeonhole -- a psychedelically tinged, folky, punky, lyrical, spooky musical brew. 'The Lonesome Death Of Shadow Morton', from the group's debut album (originally released in 1988), kicks off with a driving beat of chiming guitars, echoing snares and cymbals, and haunting vocals dropping pop-culture references from Morton (the melodramatic songwriter/producer of girl group the Shangri-Las) to Julie Harris, before fizzling away into whispered lines from the Shangri-Las' 'Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)'.
'The Black Ship', on the same album, envisions a shipwreck as less a tragedy than a transcendental experience, as Clark wails 'Abandon ship!' With ecstatic glee. Mercury Blues, originally released in 1990, is by turns more diffuse and more complicated, and features a few vocal turns from Phillips. The band really hits their stride whenever they're playing on the edge (as on the burning 'Sick Friend'), but they also occasionally temper the wildness with dreamy numbers such as the title track. The slower tracks sometimes drag (or maybe it's just the lack of energy compared to the faster stuff), but overall, what's happening on these albums is interesting. Shiva Burlesque split soon after Mercury Blues; Phillips took a few members and formed Grant Lee Buffalo, while Clark took the others and began playing under his own name.

Both albums offer a fascinating look at a group of musicians in the process of finding their own voices. Toyota techstream lite scan tool.
