>>Streaming This unit when purchased new in 2002, came with 2-256mb RAM (PC2100). I currently have 2-512mb RAM's in it. But right now I dont even have enough memory available at this point to even defragment & free up space!

Esx

(it says it needs 15% to defrag, and I currently only have 3% of free space available. And that is after deleting alot of pictures!) 2) IF I TRY ADDING the 1GB PC2100 RAM ( I already bought) into one of the 2 available memory slots, & this unit does NOT have that level of maximum memory capacity, WILL IT BLOW UP SOMETHING IN MY UNIT DUE TO OVERLOAD? It's currently at 1GB(2-512mb) so I know it's capable of that; but what about more?

Please advise ASAP. Thanks ~ Kandi. Best Answer: Try running the disk cleanup tool to free up space.

This will remove temporary internet files, temp files, and other files you don't need. To do this, right-click on the C: drive in My computer, select properties, then click the 'Disk Cleanup' button. If you haven't ever done this, there's a good chance you have a lot of clutter on your hard drive you don't need. You should also see if there are programs you can uninstall that you don't need. As far as RAM capacity, that model can go up to 1GB of RAM total (2x512MB DIMMs.). 1) If you are out of RAM at 512MB, then you got too many programs running in the background.

You need to disable programs in your Startup. You probably have tons of spyware programs running too. WinXP will even run on a 128MB. The fact that you do not have 15% free on 1GB is scary.

2) 500S is not a valid model number. Go to Gateway's Support web site and look up the specs for your computer.

If you install more RAM than your computer supports, it will either not boot up or recognizing the maximum amount. For example, if your computer only supports 1GB and you install 2GB of RAM, it will only recognize 1GB. Your computer will not short or blow up.
