Allied Health • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • The U.S. Army/ Air Force-Baylor DSc Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant (EMPA) Residency is an 18 month program of clinical rotations, formal didactic instruction, and a research project.

The residency prepares the EMPA to evaluate, diagnose, and stabilize those conditions which pose an immediate threat to life, limb, and eye sight. The EMPA will also be able to manage complex medical and surgical conditions encountered in an Emergency Department or a deployed environment. The EMPA program is modeled after emergency medicine physician residencies and was approved by The Army Surgeon General in February 1991. The curriculum mirrors the emergency medicine physician curriculum developed by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), Council Of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD), and the American College of Emergency Physicians Core Content Task Force II. The guidelines for evaluating the EMPA resident are modeled from the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) core competencies, and places emphasis on the skills required of the military Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants.

The skills that distinguish the U.S. Army/ Air Force EMPA are: resuscitation, toxicology, EMS system design and supervision, disaster management, environmental emergencies, and operational military medicine. The residency is unique in that it exists within an established Emergency Medicine Residency (San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium/SAUSHEC) which enhances educational and research opportunities. Another unique facet of the EMPA residency is a specially designed research course and orientation month introducing the residents to basic research concepts, evaluation and management of emergency patients. These comprehensive introductory courses consists of over 25 lectures on research methodology, a variety of emergency medicine topics, advanced airway labs, animal procedure labs, suture labs and certification in BLS, ACLS and PALS. The program began its first class on 1 July 1991, and graduated the first EMPA residents on 30 June 1992.

In December 2007, the program graduated the first ever Physician Assistant's with a Doctorate of Science degree. Air Force merged with the U.S. Army program in 2011, and the first U.S. Air Force Doctorate of Science of Physician Assistant Studies – Emergency Medicine physician assistant class graduated in 2012. This residency is associated with the Army Medical Specialist Corps long term health education and training (LTHET) and specialty training board.
